On the direction of the Bombay High Court, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Thursday cleared the decades-old Maruti temple opposite IIT-Bombay. This will remove a major bottleneck on the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli link road. The authorities have been trying to remove the temple from the road for many years but failed to do so owing to religious reasons.
The Hanuman idol has been relocated to the Ram temple that is about 10 meters away. The 8 ft X 10 ft Hanuman shrine was over 800 sqft which included an extension. The Mumbai police on Thursday said the idol was not damaged or disrespected in any way. “A temple in Powai has been removed in compliance with High Court orders, which had passed orders to relocate the idol after a series of litigations. The idol was not damaged or disrespected in any way,” the Mumbai police said.
Devotees thronged to the temple especially on Saturdays. Residents welcomed the peaceful removal of the 50-60 years old shrine. Says Mahendra Rai, a resident of Powai "I'm very happy that the big bottleneck has been removed, better late than never. Thank you authorities'.
According to a Bombay high court (HC) directive, the civic body was to by Friday raze all structures that had come up illegally between 1962 and 2009. Of the 495 shrines slotted for demolition, 446 have been demolished or shifted so far, said an official.
