The “Inter IIT Sports Meet”, kick started at IIT Bombay Campus on December 12. Member of Parliament, Bharat Ratna Sachin Tendulkar was the Guest of Honour at the Opening Ceremony of the Sports Meet, held later in the day. Tendulkar opened the Sports Meet by unfurling the Inter IIT Flag and lighting Mashal (ceremonial torch for the Sports Meet). Speaking at the occasion he said, “My message to the youngsters present here is – compete in the right spirit. Cricket has taught me lot of things. How to prepare for an event, planning to move forward and executing the plan. Respect for your team as well as that in opposition is very important. You may not win all games but you can definitely win hearts.” Prior to the event, he also interacted with select students of the 16 participating IITs and inspired them to follow their passion. A souvenir on the Sports Meet was also released by him on the occasion.
The Inter IIT Sports Meet, is held in December every year, wherein students from all 16 IITs battle it out for the coveted General Championship Trophy. In his address, Prof. Devang Khakhar, Director, IIT Bombay, welcomed all the participants and delegates to the Sports Meet. “You have excelled in your fields to reach this position and now you will be competing against maybe even your own previous record. Let fair play be your watch word. Good luck and best wishes for an enjoyable Sports Meet,” he added. The Opening ceremony also witnessed march past by the participating contingents, cultural performances by students and a celebratory concert featuring Bollywood music composer Mr. Amit Trivedi, accompanied by famous singers Mr. Swanand Kirkire, Mr. Amitabh Bhattacharya and Ms. Monali Thakur.
The Inter IIT Sports Meet comprises a total of 12 sports, namely Athletics, Aquatics, Basketball, Badminton, Cricket, Football, Hockey, Table Tennis, Tennis, Squash, Volleyball and Weight Lifting. The ‘Inter IIT Aquatics Meet’ was organized during October 1-4, 2014 and the Main Meet was held between December 12-19, 2014. Over 2500 students, sports officers and faculty members from the 16 IITs have come to IIT Bombay to participate in the much awaited tournament.
“IIT Bombay hosted the first ever Inter IIT back in 1961, and the Meet has come a full circle and expanded with the 50th edition being hosted here. We have planned for and are working towards making it bigger and special as well as an overall enjoyable and enriching experience for a visiting athlete,” said Shashank Srivastava, General Secretary, Sports Affairs, IIT Bombay.
The Institute has recently renovated its Gymkhana grounds and indoor courts. A new four-storey state-of-the-art facility adjacent to the gymkhana ground has been built, housing several sports utility rooms such as -- four table table-tennis room, three squash courts, a multipurpose hall, a snooker room, a weightlifting room, a board games room, and a gym, besides world class synthetic volleyball and basketball courts.
