Background
SPROUTS Environment Trust’s mission is to create public awareness and ownership of the environment and its resources amongst children and youth through education and action in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region with the vision of achieving “A sustainable environment for all”. Our 3 programmes- Eco-School, Eco- Leaders & Green communities are the mainstays of our mission and the Earth Mela along with our other activities/ Events - Wader & Flamingo Watch; Urban Farming & the Beach Clean-up is a part of our Green-Community initiatives.

The Earth Mela has been reaching out to the masses over the last six years with themes such as Food Security & Conservation (2013), Green Economies (2012), Conservation of Indian Forests (2011), Indian Wildlife (2010), Carbon Reversal Movement (2009) & Biodiversity Conservation (2008). It has witnessed participants of all age groups and backgrounds. Lectures, Poster Presentations and Workshops by eminent Environmentalists and young Scientists ensure that the theme is vigorously discussed and yet activities such as adventure sports arena and the structured workshops encourage discussions and learning through hands-on experiences. The variety of stalls display eco-friendly products and services, such as Paper Mache products, artifacts made by tribal artisans, green technologies, recycling options and organic food stalls, which help make better choices in life.

The Mela has been found relevant and engrossing to participants of all age groups and backgrounds, right from tiny tots to corporate participants. The carefully curated and captioned photography exhibition shares with the visitors some of the finest moments in nature and city environment captured by the photographer’s lens - professional and budding. These, along with the nature trails, sensitize visitors and shares more knowledge on the annual theme in the larger context of the environment. The Cyclathon, Marathon and Adventure Sports arena help spread the message of trying out healthier options of transport, vacationing and daring to explore unchartered territories.

We have been receiving some extremely gripping contributions from film-makers from across the country to be projected and viewed through all our Earth Melas. Out of the many contributions, we select the ones appropriate for the festival themes and screen them in the Auditorium through the length of 2 days as per the schedule announced in advance. These films deal with social, cultural, energy, urbanization, wildlife, displacement and educational issues too – giving an all-round understanding of the multi-dimensional element – we call Our Environment.

Since we are largely funded by our well wishers and do not have corporates sponsoring us, you can contact your corporate partners to sponsor a bunch of children to attend the Earth Mela on Nov 22-23, 2014. There will be a small registration fee for the Earth Mela, which you should pay in ADVANCE, for NGOs we provide a special concession @ Rs. 175 per student and Rs. 250 per teacher/adult/Volunteer accompanying for a whole day, which entitles children and adults to attend ALL activities (10am-6pm)! For other students the fees per day (10am-6pm) are Rs. 250 and for adults it is Rs. 350.
