IIT Bombay will be hosting the 50th edition of Inter-IIT Sports Meet 2014 this year. The Institute has already started the ground work to host the Meet. An organizing team of Officers, Staffs and Students has been formed, to carry out the execution of what will be the Institute’s biggest event of the year. “IIT Bombay hosted the first ever Inter IIT back in 1961, and the Meet has come a full circle and expanded with the 50th edition being hosted here. We have planned for and are working towards making it bigger and special as well as an overall enjoyable and enriching experience for a visiting athlete,” said Mr. Shashank Srivastava, General Secretary, Sports Affairs, IIT Bombay.
The Institute has already started renovations and fresh constructions of the Gymkhana grounds and courts. A new four-storey state-of-the-art facility adjacent to the gymkhana ground is being built, which will house several sports utility rooms. This includes a four table table-tennis room, three squash courts, a multipurpose hall, a snooker room, a weightlifting room, a board games room, and a gym. Large scale construction of Indoor halls have been undertaken adjacent to the existing one, one of which will house three world class synthetic volleyball courts; two others will be used for basketball; while the fourth will house indoor cricket nets for practice. Badminton championship grade synthetic mats are under procurement for the existing indoor hall. Renovation of the basketball and tennis courts are also in process.
The Student organizing team of IIT Bombay has also come up with a special logo for the Tournament “The logo resembles the Gateway of India which is a landmark of Mumbai. The negative (blank) space in between creates the shape of a trophy which symbolizes the spirit of competition in the Inter-IIT Sports Meet 2014. Moreover, being the Golden Jubilee year of the Sports Meet, the logo has been done in golden colour,” informed, Mr. Sapan Shah, Manager, Media and Public Relations, Inter-IIT Sports Meet 2014.
