Rotary Club of Bombay Powai quizzes 17 Teams 51 students
Studious students of Powai schools, who we all see studying science late into the night, picking their brains to solve algebra sums right, writing reports and analysis, doing projects, rushing in the midst of literature, prosaic poetry of Betrolt Brecht, struggling between break dance, karate and judo, always with headphones listening to music or lectures we don’t know, no leisure or mood to water plants, prune the leaves or play leisurely ludo – proved to us that their learning is not mere rote memorising or confined to four walls of the classrooms.
All this became evident at the Inter-school Quiz ‘Knowledge Quest’ the curtain-raiser to the Powai fest 20, an annual community bonding event conducted by Rotary Club of Bombay Powai. When 51 of them in 17 teams participated an Inter-school Quiz Competition at the Hiranandani School, Kryptik Quiz Master Ajay Poonia made many of us feel like a fools. We pinched one another whenever we found we could answer one. With their intelligent answers, and easy-going attitude of fun, they proved to us that Wordsworth was indeed right when he said, ‘Child is the father of the man’. Parents who had come along, were like children bubbling with answers.
The audience also got opportunity to voice their answers, and the correct answers got shining silver Rotary four-way test medal. While students answered with quick confidence, RCBP-ian Davina Bali kept scores efficiently. Bombay Scottish School earned coveted positions first and also second, Kendriya Vidyalaya came a close third as scores were reckoned. Besides trophies and certificates from RCBP, winners also received gift coupons for free and discounted trips to villages in Maharashtra. The objective of connecting urban students to villages through these awards was appreciated by one and all.
Chief Guest Ramon Abrol, Principal Aide, Rotary District 3141 rightly said we indeed are in safe hands. He appreciated the exemplary performance of the students, the professional handling of the quiz by the Quiz Master Ajay Poonia, participating schools and parents who encourage the children to participate and Rotary Club of Bombay Powai for providing the eco-system in Powai to develop into a all-rounded personality.
Prior to his address, Rtn Kusuma Rao’s introduction of Chief Guest Rtn Ramon Abrol was interesting as well as informative. Treasurer and Program Coordinator Farida Thakur introduced quiz master Ajay Poonia. The respect of the audience for the Quiz Master, who had already kept them spell-bound, went several notches higher. President Girija Deshpande’s introduction to Rotary and how it aligns with the Indian concepts of Dhaan and Dharma resonated with the audience. Rtn Amit Sheth welcomed the participants and parents with a fervent plea for enhancing all-round knowledge of the future generation. The sonorous invocation song by Susan Tripathi and Sonali Thakrar lifted the listeners to an ethereal plane.
President Elect Latha Vanamali proposed the vote of thanks. Principal Kalyani Patnaik who in absentia played perfect host and the school staff members received a special mention for the venue and other arrangements in the facility. Grass routes for travel vouchers, Atul Videos, Kumar of Photo Phactories and Sajal Kumar for providing sound system also receive our gratitude.
